Let's start at the beginning. What was the first record - single or album - you bought with your own money? HONESTLY! We know that hardly anyone starts off with something achingly cool like the Velvet Underground or DJ Shadow - we've all gotta start somewhere!
The first with my own money was Wu-Tang Clan ‘The W’ - so not a bad start! Though I remember getting a Walkman for Christmas when I was younger and using some tokens I got too to buy cassettes of Deep Blue Something ‘Breakfast at Tiffanys’ and Babybird ‘You’re Gorgeous’ which I just used to play on repeat over and over. Awful!
What for you are the key cornerstones of a great DJ set?
I think that playing for your audience and pacing are the two keys for me. Ultimately you’re there to entertain, so being mindful of what’s going to contribute to a great time for your audience should always be the priority. Pacing is just as important - you can’t just play non-stop bangers all night, there has to be some light and shade to allow the set to breathe.
What one track is your surefire guaranteed floorfiller?
Sam & Dave 'Soul Man' has to be up there.
Fundamentally, what can a couple expect from you as their wedding DJ?
Funk! I've always been attracted to rhythm more than melody so whatever genre I'm playing, there'll always be a strong funky groove going on to keep the party moving. I love moving across different genres and running tunes together you might not expect. Proper tunes played in a fun way!
